3/21/2024 | 32m
In this week’s episode of the Finding Good Bones podcast, guest and host Amy Winters takes us back to “Spring Break 1899” by the band Murder By Death. The conversation covers waking up to empty whiskey bottles, second chances and clean slates, and doing all the good we can. With a side of buttery Johnny Cash.

Penelope is the wife of Odysseus who was pursued by 108 suitors while Odysseus was, you know, odyssey-ing for 20 some odd years. She became a symbol for marital fidelity for delaying the suitors by saying she could only entertain their advances after weaving a funeral shroud for her husband to give to his father, but then undoing the work at night. When Odysseus finally returned after being gone for several decades he murdered all of the suitors with the help of his son and a few others, and hanged 12 maids thought to be disloyal. A different take on these events from Penelope’s view can be read in Margaret Atwood’s novella The Penelopiad. https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/0733cc7e-628c-41df-bdae-2d6311da0e93
Murder By Death is also a 1976 American murder mystery parody written by Neil Simon. The film stars Eileen Brennan, Peter Falk, Alec Guinness, Peter Sellers, Maggie Smith, and a rare performance by Truman Capote. It’s available to stream on Prime Video, but just a warning that Petter Sellers plays a character named Sidney Wang modeled after literary detective Charlie Chan, so we’ll include the Disney content warning of: “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now." https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074937/?ref_=tt_ch
